PROMPT: The Lanyard, and Finish the Sentence

Here are two prompts from VoiceCATCH this morning:

1. Read or listen to Billy Collins’ “The Lanyard.” Collins uses a lanyard in his poem to talk about the relationship between a child and mother. Try using an image—a physical object—to write about a bigger topic. If you’re having trouble, focus on the object first. Free write, and see where it takes you.

2. Complete the worksheet As/Like/Finish the Sentence by Linnea Johnson (found in The Practice of Poetry, eds. Robin Behn and Chase Twichell). Take the most interesting sentence and use it to begin a piece of writing.
